Dr. Milan Hayward

From Lindeman, Houle, and Kolb, to Boucouvalas, Templin, and many other successful researchers and practitioners, adult learning has moved from hope and hypotheses to a growing body of knowledge and successful practice. With the burgeoning demand for an adaptive workforce (and in the face of dropping college enrollment rates), higher education cannot ignore the enormous untapped latent talent within our communities across the U.S.

With personal experience as an adult learner growing through self-directed learning activities, to community college, university, and grad school success, Dr. Hayward knows supporting adult learning means more than enrolling returning students in college classes. It means an authentic respect for learner time, talent, responsibilities, and most of all, their experience. With decades of innovative service to adult learners and communities in higher education, supporting learning in non-formal and formal learning environments, providing adult learning solutions has moved beyond an imperative for Dr. Hayward to a calling.

From a member of the U.S. delegation to CONFINTEA VI, UNESCO’s global conference on adult learning, to research, and practice across the U.S., Dr. Hayward is a passionate and experienced community college advocate who is focused on all learners, including adult and underrepresented learners. Like minded and experienced colleagues are available to assist depending on the needs of your organization or partnership. Please reach out to collaborate or discuss how your organization can more fully join the global adult learning movement.

FAQs

What are adult learners?

Sometimes referred to as non-traditional, the one thing most non-traditional college students have in common–in addition to family responsibilities–is age is greater than recent high school graduates. More than having reached the age of majority, “adult learners” as a group of non-traditional students are typically referred to in the literature as having reached at least 25 years of age.

What is meant by adult learning solutions?
How can Adult Learning Solutions help our organization?
Are PLA and CPL the same as credit for experience?

Best PLA (Prior Learning Assessment) and CPL (Credit for Prior Learning) practices promote, evaluate, and award college credit for demonstrated college-level learning, not experience. Kolb indicated the articulation of learning follows experience. Our experience with PLA and CPL can help your organization remain focused on good teaching and learning, while saving adults time and money.

Learners of all ages can benefit from best practices in education. However, adult learning solutions refers to the intentional strategies used to address the unique needs of adult learners. Informed by adult learning theory and years of practice, our strategies are developed to address the unique concerns of your learners and take into account learner need, motivation, and experience.

Mindful that “effective learning solutions promote adult learner access, progress, and success," we help identify opportunities within the student life cycle (e.g., identification, recruitment, enrollment, persistence, completion, etc.). Depending on your needs, solutions may be designed to increase inclusion and enrollment, develop internal talent, advance partnerships, or create new programs.
